Mineral additive blending compositions and methods of operating a furnace are provided to avoid combustion problems, such as aggregation, deposition, corrosion and to reduce emissions. Processes for operating furnaces, such as fluidized bed reactors, powdered-fuel combustion chambers, burner combustion chambers, include the introduction of fuel and mineral additive formulations including clays and functional minerals into the furnace. The process includes at least some clay to at least partially calcined and at least partially calcined clay and functional minerals to adsorb at least some inorganic volatile compounds present in the furnace and to react with the ash produced during fuel combustion to increase its fire resistance. It further includes heating the inorganic compound-containing material and clay. The method further includes removing at least some of the at least partially calcined clay and adsorbed inorganic compounds from the furnace.
