When straightening concentricity errors on elongated workpieces having at least one toothed area with its teeth at high and low points, such as toothed shafts or racks, the layers of the surfaces of the as yet unoriented workpiece that form a reference plane become or almost at the same level active, lying between the peaks and troughs of the teeth pitch circle or duty cycle of the teeth for determining deviations from the ideal straight workpiece scanned at least point or section wise. The resulting measurement data are used by the straightening machine in such a way that as ideally as possible a straight workpiece, at least in the gearing area, is achieved by straightening. The heights of the tooth tips forming the teeth high points and the heights of adjacent tooth surfaces lying in the reference plane are detected, and the elevation differences of the tooth tops are determined to the elevations of adjacent tooth surfaces lying in the reference plane. The height differences are used as correction measurement data by the straightening machine such that these height differences are taken into account when straightening the workpiece to a workpiece which is ideally straight in the reference plane.
