The invention relates to a method (23) for determining an object perception probability (Wy, Wz) with which a driver (11) of a motor vehicle (10) perceives objects (O1, O2, O3) in an environment (12) of the motor vehicle (10) wherein a viewing direction (19) of the driver (11) is detected by a control device (14) of the motor vehicle (10) by means of a viewing direction detection device (15) and depending on the detected viewing direction (19) for the objects (O1, O2, O3 ) a provisional probability of perception (Wx) that the driver consciously perceives the respective object (O1, O2, O3), is determined. The invention provides that a respective optical salience (S1, S2, S3) which indicates an optical stimulus intensity of the respective object (O1, O2, O3) is determined for the objects (O1, O2, O3) and the object perception probability ( Wy, Wz) of the objects (O1, O2, O3) are respectively set as a function of the provisional probability of perception (Wx) and the respective salience (S1, S2, S3) of the object (O1, O2, O3).
