Systems and methods for providing an immersive listening experience in a limited area using a rear sound bar

Systems and methods are described for providing an immersive listening area for one or more listeners. To improve the immersive experience a rear sound bar 306 is placed behind the listeners and the input channels of the rear sound bar receive customized processing to create a virtual rear sound stage. The virtual rear sound stage and a front sound stage created by a front sound bar 302, combine to create an overall sound stage to encompass the listeners, providing the listeners with an immersive listening experience. This is achieved by receiving at least one rear speaker signal and generating, from said rear speaker signal, a plurality of virtualized rear speaker signals. The plurality of speaker signals are then produced by the rear soundbar comprising a plurality of speakers. Wherein the generation of the virtualized rear speaker signals comprises decorrelation processing by which at least two of the virtualized rear speaker signals are decorrelated. Preferably the rear virtualization process comprises height virtualization processing. Preferably there is a separate subwoofer.
