A method is disclosed for updating a user interface. In the method a user interaction is received at the user interface of a first program unit. A message is sent, in response to the user interaction, comprising a first user interface element ID and a first program unit state ID, and data representing the user interaction. A response is received comprising data representing a change state list object and including a second user interface element ID. The change state list object represents modifications made in dependence on processing of the user interaction to a second program unit state object which represents the state of a second program unit, and comprises information relating to the state of a second user interface element.
