an apparatus comprising a monitoring unit adapted to optically determine geometric parameters of rod-like articles, and at least one rejection unit adapted to remove a rod-like article from the mass flow. the apparatus is characterized by the monitoring unit having optical recorders recording images of opposing side surfaces of the mass flow in a conveyor and the aforementioned surfaces are formed by frontal surfaces of articles similar to rods. the apparatus, based on the recorded images, using geometric parameters of the opposite front surfaces of rod-like articles, identifies and determines the position of defective rod-like articles in the mass flow, and the rejection unit comprises at least one element adapted to reject the defective rod-like article, being assembled in such a way that it moves forward along with the mass flow.
