the invention relates to a method of operating a permanently excited synchronous machine (1) comprising a stator (2) with a stator winding, a rotor (3) and a thyristor actuator (4) for adjusting phase currents ( iu, iv, iw) of the stator winding. During the process, at least two terminal voltages of the synchronous machine (1) are detected continuously. to start the synchronous machine (1), the stator winding is energized with at least one current pulse. after each current pulse it is checked whether a characteristic voltage value formed from the terminal voltages exceeds a specified voltage limit value. as soon as the characteristic voltage value exceeds the voltage limit value, the synchronous machine (1) is operated by repeatedly determining the angle of the current rotor pole (cp) using the detected current terminal voltages, calculating an ignition angle ideal for the synchronous machine (1) using the angle of the current rotor pole (cp) and driving the thyristor controller (4) according to the ideal ignition angle of the current.
