A flow-type particle analyzer for measuring the excitation spectrum of fluorescent particles in a fluid stream, comprising: a) an excitation light source (10) emitting a collimated broad spectrum excitation light beam, b ) excitation optical elements (12, 14) that focus and direct the excitation light beam over a detection region in said fluid stream, wherein said excitation optical elements (12, 14) include a scattering element (12 ) that scatters the excitation light beam spectrum, and wherein said scattering element (12) is oriented so that the resulting spectrum of continuously changing wavelengths is scattered over a detection region of said fluid stream, so that a particle (1) flowing through said detection region will traverse the scattered spectrum of the excitation light beam through the changing wavelengths; and c) optical detection elements (16, 18, 20) that measure the light emitted from the particles (1) in the detection region.
