A chest X-ray image tone scale conversion method wherein a computer of an image tone scale conversion device for converting the tone scale of a chest X-ray image of interest to be interpreted acquires the chest X-ray image of interest (S50), uses a model, which has been machine-learned beforehand, to detect in the chest X-ray image of interest a structure containing a line structure comprising a first line-shaped region having a brightness different from that of the surroundings and visualized by projecting a plurality of anatomical structures with different X-ray transmissivity, or, a second line-shaped region visualized by projecting an anatomical structure including a hairline or a wall of a bronchus or the trachea (S100), extracts a pixel set corresponding to a region in the vicinity of the structure, generates a contrast conversion formula for histogram smoothing using a histogram of the pixel set (S500), and uses the contrast conversion formula to perform brightness conversion for each pixel value of the entire chest X-ray image of interest (S700).
