Disclosed is a method for preparing a catalytic material of an electrode for electrochemical reduction reactions, the material comprising an active phase made from tungsten (W) and/or molybdenum (Mo), and an electrically conductive substrate, the method comprising: a) a step of impregnation by bringing the electrically conductive substrate into contact with a solution comprising an organic solvent A and a mononuclear precursor made from W or Mo, in its monomeric or dimeric form, having at least one X=O or X-OR bond or at least one X=S or X-SR bond (in which X = W or X = Mo); b) a step of drying the impregnated substrate at a temperature less than or equal to 200°C; c) a step of sulphiding in a mixture of H2S/H2 or H2S/N2 containing at least 5% by volume H2S in the mixture or in pure H2S at a temperature greater than or equal to ambient temperature.
