The present disclosure relates to a method for identifying and distinguishing a cause of at least one misfire (V) of an internal combustion engine (10), wherein the internal combustion engine (10) has a plurality of cylinders (CYL(0)-CYL(5)), at least one exhaust gas tract (13A, 13B) and an exhaust gas sensor (15A, 15B), which is arranged in the exhaust gas tract (13A, 13B), the method having the following steps: - detecting a measurement signal (MS_CYL) using the exhaust gas sensor (15A, 15B) over a determined first time period (Δt1), the measurement signal (MS_CYL) being characteristic of the oxygen content in the exhaust gas tract (13A, 13B), - dividing the measurement signal (MS_CYL) into measurement signal portions (MS_CYL_AB), - assigning the measurement signal portions (MS_CYL_AB) to the corresponding cylinders (CYL(0)-CYL(5)), as a result of which cylinder-selective measurement signal profiles (MS_CYL_SEL(0-5)) are created which are characteristic of the respective oxygen contents downstream of the cylinders (CYL(0)-CYL(5)) over the determined first time period (Δt1), - evaluating the cylinder-selective measurement signal profiles (MS_CYL_SEL(0-5)) to identify at least one misfire (V) of the internal combustion engine (10).
