The invention relates to a sewing machine, comprising a bearing face (1) for sewing material that is to be sewn together with a top thread and bottom thread and rests on the bearing face (1), wherein underneath, on the side of the bearing face (1) remote from the sewing material, a bottom thread bobbin (2) for receiving bottom thread is arranged. According to the invention, underneath the bearing face (1), for loading the bottom thread bobbin (2) with a predetermined length of bottom thread, there is arranged a bottom-thread providing device (3) that cooperates with the bottom thread bobbin (2), provides a predetermined length of bottom thread and works independently of the top thread.
