Provided is a method for obtaining a lignin degradation product, comprising the steps of: selectively methylating a hydroxyl group of lignin; degrading methylated lignin using lignin degrading enzyme; and obtaining a degradation product containing an aromatic compound from the degradation step, wherein the selective methylation is to selectively methylate a functional group including a phenolic hydroxyl group (phenolic-OH) in the hydroxyl groups of the lignin.
