A process for producing an absorbent fibrous web, which comprises the steps of a) laying fiberized cellulose fibers made of CTMP in a gas stream on a base, b) pre-compressing the cellulose fibers to produce a loose fleece, c) introducing the fleece from step b) into the gap of a Pair of calender rolls, the surfaces of the calender rolls each having projections with which the fibers from step b) are pressed together under pressure in the range between 150 to 600 MPa.
