An overlock sewing machine comprising: a swing lever section (16, 19, 20, 71) arranged so that the swing lever can be pivoted in a predetermined range so that the swing lever is set in a release position in a stationary state when a rotation of a main shaft (28) is to be released, and so that when the rotation of the main shaft (28) is to be blocked, the pivoting lever is pivoted and shifted into a position away from the release position; a switch (32) which is a motor configured to drive the main shaft (28) toggles between a drive enable state and a drive lock state; a detection lever (73) arranged so that the detection lever (73) can be pivoted with a pivot axis extending in one direction; which differs from the direction in which the pivot axis of the pivot lever section (16, 19, 20, 71) extends, and which is configured that it can be pivoted between an operation release position in which the switch (32) is set in the motor drive release state and an operation lock position in which the switch (32) is set in the motor drive lock state; a detection lever spring (75) which is a force on the detection lever (73) toward the operation lock position; a cover detection shaft (76) which is arranged to be along a direction in which the pivot axis of the swing lever portion (16, 19, 20, 71) is so configured and configured is that it can be slid into position so as to push and slide the detection lever (73) from the operation lock position to the operation release position; a cover detection shaft spring (77) that applies a force to the cover detection shaft (76) by a distance between the cover detection shaft (76) and the detection lever (73); a gripper cover (83) which is arranged to cover at least part of the gripper (1, 2) and which is configured to be opened and closed; a pushing section (83c) which is configured together with the gripper cover (83) to be moved as a single unit and pressed against the cover detection shaft (76) so that the cover detection shaft (76) approaches the detection lever (73) when the gripper cover (83) is set in a closed position; Gripper cover spring (82c) which applies a force to the gripper cover (83) so that when the gripper cover (83) is in a closed state, the cover detection shaft (76) against the force applied by the cover detection shaft spring (77) and by the detection lever spring (75) applied force is shifted to move the detection lever (73) from the operation lock position to the operation release position; andan operation restricting section (71, 73c) which limits an operation of the detection lever (73) depending on the position of the swing lever section (16, 19, 20, 71), so that the detection lever (73) when the swing lever section (16, 19, 20 , 71) is set in the release position, can be pivoted and displaced into the actuation release position, and so that the detection lever (73), when the pivoted lever section (16, 19, 20, 71) is not set in the release position, cannot be moved into the actuation release position can be pivoted and moved.
