Accelerated synchronization operations using fine grain dependency checking are disclosed. A graphics multiprocessor comprises a plurality of execution units and a synchronization circuit arrangement which is designed to determine the availability of at least one execution unit. When at least one execution unit is available, the synchronization circuit arrangement is designed to carry out a fine-grained dependency check of the availability of dependent data or operands in the shared local memory or cache.
