The invention relates to a method enabling a smart electric meter to transmit a message representative of a detection of a break in its general electrical supply. Said counter belongs to an on-line carrier communication network enabling it to communicate metrology information to a management entity via a data concentrator. Each meter is also equipped with means of communication on a wide area network with a long range and low energy consumption, known as the LPWAN network. When a meter detects a break in its general power supply (300), it switches to an emergency power supply. Said counter then generates (301) a power supply failure message intended for the management entity, said message conforming to at least one standard for exchanging electricity consumption measurement data used by said entity and transmits (302 , 303) said message to the management entity using the communication means on the LPWAN network.
