The present invention relates to the field of the treatment of demineralization effluents, more particularly to the recycling of such effluents, and relates to a process for demineralization of whey and treatment of the effluents produced, as well as an installation as such suitable for putting implementing the process. A method for treating whey demineralization effluents comprising the following steps of i) supplying a whey demineralization effluent, ii) reverse osmosis treatment of the effluent recovered in step i) so as to obtain a permeate and a reverse osmosis retentate, iii) neutralization of the reverse osmosis retentate at a pH of 6 to 9, iv) treatment by nanofiltration of the neutralized reverse osmosis retentate so as to obtain a nanofiltration permeate comprising the monovalent ions and a nanofiltration retentate comprising the divalent ions and the residual organic materials, v) treatment by electrodialysis on a bipolar membrane of the nanofiltration permeate obtained in step iv) so as to obtain at least one acid solution and at least one basic solution. The process thus makes it possible to treat said effluents, to limit their impact at the environmental level and to generate solutions which can be used in the process for demineralizing whey as such. Advantageously, this also makes it possible to reduce the cost of demineralization of whey since part of the process water of the electrodialysis comes from the treatment of the effluents generated. The method according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the total amount of effluent sent to the treatment plant.
