A drive assembly 101 comprising a drive mechanism 104 having two output shafts 113 for connection to wheels (105A, Fig.1) of a vehicle, a sub frame 106 having at least first and second mounting features 107,108 for mounting the drive assembly 101 to the lateral sides of the body (102, Fig.1) of the vehicle, and a removable cover 208 attached to the sub frame 106 and covering at least a part of the drive mechanism 104. The sub frame 106 comprises a continuous component (110, Fig.2) extending from the first mounting feature 107 to the second mounting feature 108 and the continuous component (110, Fig.2) has a hole or recess (401, Fig.4) in which at least a part of the drive mechanism 104 resides. A container may be located within the hole or recess (401, Fig.4). The drive mechanism could comprise an electric motor a differential. Also included is a method of installing the drive mechanism 104 into the sub frame 106.
