A light field display apparatus (1, Fig.1) comprises: projector(s) 3 suitable for projecting light field components for a 3D image; a diffusion screen 5 which diffuses incident light rays through a diffusion angle α; an angular modulator 4 arranged to deflect light rays from the projector(s) through an angle of deflection onto the diffusion screen; and a controller (2, Fig.1) which varies the angle of deflection of the angular modulator in synchronisation with the projection of the light field components in order to emulate an array of projectors 21 projecting respective light field components at respective angles onto the diffusion screen, wherein each projector is separated by an angular separation φ substantially equal to the diffusion angle. The diffusion screen may be a holographic element with anisotropic diffusion properties. The projector may comprise an image modulator with a framerate at least twice as great as a framerate viewable by an observer. The angular modulator may be a rotatable reflective optical device, it may be rotatable in discrete steps or a continuous manner. The angular modulator may be a transmissive optical device. The diffusion screen may be incorporated into the angular modulator. Fig.2
