A branch cutter has a circular saw blade 20 driven by a motor, the saw blade being partially covered by a housing 24 which has a first 52 and a second opening 54 exposing a periphery of the saw blade. A part of the first opening and the second opening may be diametrically opposed. The centre of the saw blade may be offset from the longitudinal axis of a cutter head 10, the motor being housed in the cutter head and the saw being mounted on the cutter head. The circumferential extent, radial extent, and shape and size of the first and second openings may be substantially identical. The saw blade can be rotated by a pinion, which is connected to the motor by a flexible drive belt 36. One side of the saw may be covered by the housing while the other side of the saw blade may be exposed. The saw blade may be removable. The leading or trailing edges may comprise teeth. The invention enables branches thicker than the saw blade to be cut without the user having to readjust their position.
