Retractable leash with improved locking and unlocking mechanism

A retractable lead, e.g. for dogs, comprises a pivoting brake application button or lever 6 that urges a brake pawl 4, against resilient bias 5, into braking engagement with the spool 2 by rotating an intermediate pivoting member 7, e.g. a cam, in abutment between the lever 6 and pawl 4. A brake locking switch 8 on the lever 6 acts to lock the brake pawl 4 into said braking engagement by sliding, along an L-shaped guide track (9, Fig. 1) inside the spool housing 1, into abutment with the intermediate pivoting member 7.
