Disclosed is a method of controlling a solenoid actuated fuel injector 10 for an internal combustion engine. The injector 10 includes a solenoid actuator 22 which may be energized to move a pintle 20 and needle arrangement such that the needle moves away from a valve seat 28 to an open position. The invention includes circuitry adapted to apply a chopped hysteresis control subsequent to an energisation phase. The control method comprises: obtaining a signal of the current or voltage across the solenoid, analyzing the voltage or current to detect a chopped hysteresis pulse, determining the time point of the end of the chopped hysteresis pulse and applying a braking pulse to the solenoid, the timing of which is dependent on the time point of the end of the chopped hysteresis pulse.
