The method involves building a communication controller (KC) from a freely programmable communication-arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and coding multiple instructions in an instruction code of the ALU. Logic function blocks are arranged parallel in the ALU, where the blocks carry out specific communication functions. The functions are not fixedly preset, and are formed based on freely programmable and communication functions optimized ALU. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for coupling multiple bus participants of an open automation system with a distributed control (2) an automation device comprising a freely programmable communication arithmetic logic unit (3) a method for configuration of an automation device with a communication controller (4) a method for synchronization of bus participants of an automation system with a distributed control (5) a device for synchronization of bus participants of an automation system with a distributed control.
