摘要

A Japanese hand plane with a cap iron is one of the basic tools used by junior high school students for woodwoking. In addition, several kinds of improved hand planes designed for those students have been manufactured and sold so far .The purpose of this study was to obtain the optimum conditions of the amount (v) of a gap caused by repairing bottom surface and the horizontal mouth opening (h) in the planing of wood with a Japanese conventional hand plane equipped with a cap iron. The orthogonal planing tests of wood with the hand plane, were performed. Air-dried wooden boards of white seraya (Parashorea malaanonan Merr.) were planed, and the roughness of surface planed and the deformation of the chip were observed and estimated. The effects of the amount (v) of a gap caused by repairing bottom surface and the horizontal mouth opening (h) upon characteristics of planing with various hand planes were discussed, and the optimum conditions of v and h were obtained.
