A STUDY ON DEIXIS USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER �BERTIE� IN THE FILM ENTITLED �THE KING�S SPEECH�

Keyword : Person, Temporal, and Spatial Deixis, Pronouns, Demonstratives, Tenses and Place Adverb.ududNot all communication can run smoothly because the listener maybe does not know the context of the speakerÂ’s speech. Some speeches are difficult to be understood when the listener does not know who, when and where the speech is spoken. The theory which discusses who, when, and where of speech is called deixis theory. The writer is interested in studying deixis in film because film is a reflection of human life. The film that is analyzed here is Tom HooperÂ’s film entitled The KingÂ’s Speech.ududThe purposes of this study were to identify the deixis used by Bertie in The KingÂ’s Speech film and to describe the way the deixis is presented in BertieÂ’s utterances in The KingÂ’s Speech Film.ududThis study used qualitative design because it investigated the utterances of Bertie as the main character in The KingÂ’s Speech Film and used words in presenting the data and document analysis as the research instrument. In collecting the data, the writer watched The KingÂ’s Speech film written by David Seidler and directed by Tom Hooper released in 2010, searched the script of the film to understand the utterances well, replayed and re-watched the film well to understand the contexts and select the data which are categorized as deixis. Finally, the writer rewrote all of the data about deixis.ududThe results of this study showed that the deixis used by Bertie as the main character of The KingÂ’s Speech film consisted of person, temporal and spatial deixis. The deixis were presented in pronouns, demonstratives, tenses and place adverbs.
