The switching language from English to Bahasa Indonesia or Banjarese, otherwiseudmixing English sentences with Bahasa or Banjarese words can be easily found there. In speaking class, the students are required to talk only in English, but theudfact there is still code switching or code mixing happened in the class. Therefore, the writer would like to find out the types of code switching and code mixingudfound in Speaking I class, the frequency of the phenomenon to happen, the reason that triggers the phenomenon and the benefit by using code switching and code mixing.udTo conduct the analysis of this phenomenon, the writer used several methods, such as observation, video recording, and interview. The observation and video recording was conducted in twelve meetings from A to D class of the third semester. And the interview with the lecturer and the representative students was conducted after finishing the video recording. The video recording results were written down into transcripts and then observed to find the answer forudresearch questions. udThe result of this study showed that there are three types of code switching and code mixing that usually occurred in this class. The types of code switching and code mixing according to the frequency are inter-sentential (1080 utterances), intra-sentential (544 utterances), and tag switching (99 utterances). The average frequency of code switching and code mixing in every meeting is quite often, it is about 57,7% compared to full English usage in the classroom that only reaches 42,3%. The reason that triggers this phenomenon from lecturer’s point of view is students’ inability to understand what she said in English. Meanwhile, the reasons from students’ point of view are the lack of vocabularies, the anxiety of using English grammar, saying correct pronunciation, or choosing the appropriate vocabulary, the tendency of forgetting the vocabulary, and the fact that they are not used to talking only in English every day. And the benefits of using code switching and code mixing in speaking class is to ease the listener who cannot understand English, to make the listener understand the speaker’s intention, to ease English speaking process with the people with lower leveludcomprehension, help the students improving their vocabulary, and encourage the students to be accustomed to talk in English.
