Un nouvel exemple de réception d’une figure paléo-chrétienne dans le roman français : Athénagore d’Athènes et le Vray et parfait amour de Martin Fumée (1599)

A New Example of the Reception of an Ancient Christian Figure in the Renaissance Novel : Athenagoras and Martin Fumée’s Du vray et parfait amour (1599). The attribution of the French novel Du vray et parfait amour (Paris, 1599 and 1612) to the Athenian philosopher Athenagoras (actually a second century Christian apologist) by its author, Martin Fumée or Guillaume Philandier, is based on an implicit connection between two other Church great figures : first the novelist Heliodorus, then looked upon as the bishop of Trikka (Thessaly) after having published his famous work The Ethiopics ; second Eustathios, archbishop of Thessaloniki, who was supposed to be the author of the Byzantine novel Hysmene and Hysmenias, actually a work of Eumathios Makrembolites. The heroes of both novels (Du vray et parfait amour and The Ethiopics) have very close names (Theagenes and Theogenes, Chariclea and Charide) ; furthermore the name Athenagoras may have been borrowed to another Greek romance, yet unpublished, but known by scholars, Chaireas and Callirhoe.
