Abstract : The author reviews the main characteristics of the practice of local inhabitants providing lodging for visitors in tourist areas and draws on a few examples of the resulting impact on domestic facilities and local customs to illustrate the dynamism of local populations with respect to tourism in the local area. The article shows how a practical approach which is strongly pluridisciplinary in character can be used to manage the socio- economic aspects of tourism and give new meaning to the notion of economic profitability which, although developed by the local population, is none the less in line with the interests and requirements of the international tourism industry.
