摘要

In Japan, universities have adopted the entrance examination system only for returnee students (kikokusei or kikokushijo). However, it is unclear how universities assess what returnees have learnt abroad, or what kind of knowledge they have cultivated in high school. Universities actually tend to focus on examination, which does not necessarily correspond with the education curriculum in overseas countries, for selection. Therefore, returnee students are required to prepare for passing the examinations.  This article clarifies the process in which returnee students come to know and understand what they should study to score high enough to pass the exam for returnees in Japan. I have carried out field-work research for two years and two months at a private tuition school in Tokyo (referred to here as Juku A). From this research, I found out the process in which students come to notice “the signal of ability” from where they have no idea of what they are expected and being evaluated, to where they start to study along with that signal.
