The survey conducted in 2006 was aimed at evaluating the cooperation between rural public libraries and lower secondary school pupils from entire Poland. The article is concentrated on developing library collections and their adjusting to the needs of young people. Data gathered from surveyed librarians refer mainly to the types of publications bought for children and young people as well as to the rules of their choosing. From the other hand, as it turned out, pupils exchange books borrowed from libraries and those obtained from other sources. They also evaluate various aspects of library performance. The comparison of opinions and information provided by both groups of respondents makes it possible to identify the role of communal library in the life of lower secondary school pupils from rural areas.
