Over the last century the debate over economic inequality has become one of the most momentous and influential topics within academic and political circles. The central guidelines of the orthodox economics literature point towards a model of development and collective wellbeing where the role played by economic inequality is minimal. However, the new evidence in the current trends of increasing economic inequality is putting into question the basic tenets of classical economics and its adherents. The main objective of this essay is to clarify what role, degree of involvement or effect economic inequality has over the collective economic development of a particular society. Thus, this study seeks to define how economic inequality is a product of the economic relations offered by free market capitalism and how the inconsistent principles thereof, such as private property, money and the constant quest for infinite growth, undermine the original postulates raised by economists in its essential origins. Finally this paper outlines how economic inequality affects the collective welfare, the health of the public and the collective economic development.
