Antifouling Products: Pleasure Boats, Commercial Vessels, Nets, Fish Cages andOther Underwater Equipment

The report summarizes the assessment of the environmental as well as the healtheffects of antifoulants and the regulations that apply to these products. An antifoulant is a product designed to protect the hulls of vessels, underwater structures etc. from the fouling effects of marine organisms attached to surfaces. In order to make adequate hazard evaluations the National Chemicals Inspectorate has analyzed the need for antifoulants in Swedish waters in addition to making both toxicological and ecotoxicological evaluations. A great deal of attention has been paid to the salinity of the water since the organisms causing severe fouling problems only live in marine ecosystems, whereas fouling is usually minimal in freshwater.
