Algae and Water Treatment in the Netherlands: Problem Analysis and TreatmentStrategies in Five Water Companies

The report intends to make a cross section of the present situation with respectto algae and related drinking water production problems in the Netherlands, in order to serve as support in the preparation of a final version of a research proposal dealing with algae and water treatment. The report itself covers two basic aspects. First, it gives an overview of the situation with respect to algae presence in the raw water sources utilized by the five supporting water companies, their production related problems, and finally, related treatment strategies considered as solutions to particular problems. The second aspect covered in the report is an overview of contemporary worldwide experience with respect to eutrophication and algae related quantitative and qualitative phenomena, as well as latest developments with respect to treatment solutions of the algae problem.
