摘要

This research is part of the Netherlands Indian Ocean Program 1990-1995. The goalof this research is to describe the horizontal and vertical distribution of trace metals and major elements in the sediments of the northern Indian Ocean and the processes to which these elements are subjected. The highest concentrations of organic carbon and nitrogen are found at stations near the margin between upwelling water and the open ocean. Summarizing, it can be said that sediments in the upwelling area differs greatly from those at greater water depth and near the equator.
