Cultural Values and Health Research: A Methods Conference. Held in Milwaukee,Wisconsin on September 26-28, 1994. Abstract, Executive Summary and Final Report

The purpose of the Cultural Values and health Research Methods Conference was toreduce the health disparities among Americans by providing health invervention researchers with increased knowledge of and skills in cross-cultural research methods. The two and one-half day working invitational conference was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 26-28, 1994 and consisted of opening and closing keynote speakers, methods expert speakers, optional individual consultation with speakers, optional interest group meetings, and small working groups which were facilitated by conference planners. Speakers addressed the methodological issues of designing culturally appropriate health intervention research. Forty-eight invited researchers, the conference planners, conference speakers, and six doctoral post-doctoral students participated. Key issues, strategies for problem solving, and issues yet to be resolved were presented and discussed. An anthology of readings and video tapes of presentations were made available to participants. Dissemination plans include the use of conference information to enhance their research programs with ethnic minority populations and sharing the information with colleagues and students in a variety of classes and seminars.
