摘要

The Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) includes the navigable reaches of theUpper Mississippi (1,380), Illinois (526 km), Kaskaskia (19 km), Black (2 km), St. Croix (40 km), and Minnesota Rivers (42 km). Land cover/land use mapping provides a means to measure ecosystem health and vitality. This report addresses the technical aspects of developing a systemic land cover database from satellite imagery. Information generated can be used in analyses of spatial relationships of the ecosystem or its components. Multi-temporal land cover/land use mapping creates data which can be used to evaluate changes in location, aerial extent, or frequency for selected resource components between two or more points in time using a geographic information system (GIS).
