Survey of Mental Health Services in Large Jails and Jail Systems

Recognizing a need for basic information on jail-based mental health staffing and211u001eservices, National Institute of Corrections (NIC) initiated a study in March 1995 211u001eto explore the issue among the nation's largest jails. The results presented in 211u001ethis report provide an initial overview of data nationally and in contributing 211u001ejurisdictions. Project staff distributed a survey instrument to member agencies 211u001ein NIC's Large Jail Network, a working group of approximately eighty-five 211u001ejurisdictions with total jail populations approaching or in excess of 1,000 211u001einmates. The survey instrument is attached as Appendix A. Fifty-six agencies 211u001eresponded to the survey. Staff compiled and analyzed the data. Because the 211u001eproject was viewed as introductory in nature and was conducted within a tight 211u001etimeframe, staff made only a minimal effort to work with agencies to clarify the 211u001edata.
