The report describes educational programs and policies at the University ofMinnesota School of Medicine (UM) designed to encourage its graduates to enter primary care and to practice in rural or underserved areas. The programs and policies described are those that appear to have an obvious relationship with these outcomes. The specific effects of these programs, however, either separately or combined, on students' career choices regarding residency choices and practice locations have not been examined rigorously. The available data offer only descriptive information on the relevant outcomes. These data do suggest that efforts to determine how these programs contribute to an apparent shift in geographic and specialty choices may be valuable to other medical schools considering similar curricular changes.
