Teaching Physicians the Role of Community Resources in Geriatric MedicalManagement. Final Report

This project was previously funded by a grant from the Administration on Aging in1991-93. During the initial funded phase of the project, training programs were conducted in four states. The current project phase was funded by an additional dissemination grant which was secured to continue the project into three additional states, to complete secondary analyses and evaluation of the training seminars, and to complete a survey of a control sample of primary care physicians. Subsequently, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin provided funds and joined the project, as did one county medical society. Additionally, the AAFP sponsored a program. Ultimately, seminars were conducted in ten states. The workshops in New York and Florida were also cosponsored by the Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons which gave the program publicity through their newsletters and mailing reaching 40,000 hispanic physicians. The objectives were: (1) to increase the awareness of physicians, patients, and caregivers of the caregivers of the needs of home bound older adults and the impact that community resources can have on maintaining their independence; (2) to teach physicians appropriate medical management in the home; (3) to support the goals of the Eldercare Campaign; and (4) to improve the health and independence of older people, particularly, low income and minority elderly.
