ATSDR and the American Samoa Government conducted an exposure study to determinewhether residents of American Samoa were exposed to selected metals as a result of eating locally caught fish. Among all participants 26 through 45 years of age, the geometric means of urine arsenic and blood mercury were statistically significantly higher for those with high fish consumption levels than for those with low fish consumption levels. Of 103 participants surveyed from the target area, 98 pecent reported not having eaten fish caught in inner Pago Pago Harbor where a fish advisory was in effect.
