Heavy Vehicle Driver Workload Assessment. Task 7B. In-Cab Text Message System and211 Cellular Phone Use by Heavy Vehicle Drivers in a Part-Task Driving Simulator. 211 Final Report Supplement

This report contains the results of a simulator study conducted to serve as a211u001esupplement to a NHTSA heavy vehicle driver workload field study. Its purpose was 211u001ethe evaluation of effects of cellular phone and text message display use tasks on 211u001edriver-vehicle performance. Fourteen truck drivers participated and were asked to 211u001eengage in three cellular phone dialing tasks (auto-dialing; local 7-digit 211u001edialing; and long-distance dialing), two cognitive cellular phone tasks 211u001e(responding to questions of a biographic nature or involving mental arithmetic), 211u001eand seven CRT text message reading tasks (tachometer checking, time checking, 211u001eradio tuning, 4-line reading, auto-dial, local-dial, and long-distance dial). 211u001eDriver-vehicle performance was also evaluated relative to traffic density. 211u001eResults indicated that driver-vehicle performance varied with respect to each of 211u001ethe three kinds of in-cab tasks. Performance was also differentiated with respect 211u001eto traffic density, although to a lesser extent. Of note is that the CRT reading 211u001etasks had a relatively more noticeable impact on driver-vehicle performance than 211u001edid either the dialing or cognitive tasks. This report concludes with a 211u001ecomparison of simulator and on-the-road data collection results and prospects for 211u001efuture heavy vehicle driver workload assessments.
