NIST researchers have developed a reference implementation and companion211u001edemonstration for this currently defined set of specifications to provide a 211u001econcrete example of the IEEE P1451, Draft Standard for a Smart Transducer 211u001eInterface for Sensors and Actuators. The reference implementation includes both 211u001ehardware and software components that when integrated together yield an 211u001eenvironment for illustrating complete P1451 functional aspects and capabilities. 211u001eThis document briefly provides an overview of both parts of the standard and more 211u001especifically how they relate to this demonstration. The reference implementation 211u001eapproach used as well as resources required are also discussed to familiarize the 211u001ereader with the demonstration environment. Specific implementation issues are 211u001ethen discussed concerning the several main areas of the software and hardware 211u001ecomponents used in this implementation. The first software component, called 211u001eNCAPTool, written in C++, provides a graphical user interface (GUI) -based 211u001eWindows environment in which various functional aspects of the standards can be 211u001eexercised. The second component is a dynamic link library (DLL), also written in 211u001eC++, that provides an Application Programming Interface (API) to the P1451.1, 211u001eDraft Standard for a Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) Information 211u001eModel. The third component provides the hardware necessary to illustrate a 211u001etangible implementation of the P1451.2, Draft Standard for a Transducer to 211u001eMicroprocessor Communication Protocols and Transducer Electronic Data Sheet 211u001e(TEDS) Formats. All three components together illustrate the integration of both 211u001eP1451.1 and P1451.2 as well as providing a visual capability for demonstrating 211u001ethe standards' key functional aspects.
