Optimal Mix of Gas and Electric Packaged Cooling Units. Final Report, September1994-February 1996

This study examined the economics of rate transitions brought about by theinstallation of packaged gas engine-driven rooftop air conditioning systems. The study utilized the hourly simulation program, DOE-2.1, to generate building profiles of six building sizes from 10 to 400 tons, in fourteen U.S climates. Utility bill calculation software covering 47 electric utilities were used to examine the cost of transitioning between every rate applicable over a range of electric demands. The results showed very high savings for some cases, easily enough to justify the cost premium of installing partial gas air conditioning systems.
