Contemporary Issues in Industrial Relations: Implications for WIRS

The overall aim of this project was to build up a picture of current issues andpractices in workplace employee relations, incorporating the transformations which have taken place since 1990, and to assess their implications for WIRS 4. There were three main elements to the project: a review of the contemporary literature on employee relations, much of which centered on the impact of human resource management (HRM) on the workplace; series of some 35 interviews with: practicing HR/personnel managers in a range of (mainly large) employment settings; representatives from institutional bodies, such as national trade unions, employer associations, etc., and academic and other analysts and commentators, who are familiar both with WIRS and the world it describes; discussions with potential WIRS users within the Employment Department.
