Wheel-work contact is a concept central to the study of grindability of materialsand thermal damage in grinding. A new experimental method, based on the use of a split workpiece carrying an electric potential but separated by a thin layer (less than 80 micrometers) of insulator, was used to evaluate the wheel-work contact in surface grinding. Passage of the grinding wheel over the insulator short-circuits the two halves and this duration was used to evaluate the contact resistance and the subsequent interpretation of the signals to obtain the contact length were attempted. In this context, the approach of using the micro-pulse count and related contract resistance during the grinding wheel passage over the insulated region, is potentially interesting to relate the contact length with the number of active individual grit contact in grinding.
