Brugg Fence Evaluation

A rockfall mitigation project was undertaken to address rockfall hazard along PARoute 248 in Carbon County, south of Palmerton, PA. The rockfall mitigation system consists of a rockfall fence and slope netting. The fence produces a physical barrier, controlling rockfall from above. The slope net drapes the rock slope below the fence, to control the rockfall from this area. The rockfall fence was engineered to absorb and dissipate rockfall impact energies to a maximum of 70 ft -tons. These nets stopped rocks delivering impact energies of 500 ft-tons with acceptable levels of maintenance. Maintenance and cleaning of the nets was easily accomplished by PennDOT's maintenance personnel using normal equipment and supplies.
