Toward a New National Weather Service. Assessment of Hydrologic andHydrometeorological Operations and Services

The National Weather Service Modernization Committee undertook a comprehensiveassessment of the National Weather Service's (NWS) plans and progress for the modernization of hydrologic and hydrometeorological operations and services. The forty recommendations made by the committee in this report cover a wide range of NWS activities in which improvements could benefit NWS' weather of NWS activities in which improvements could benefit NWS' weather and hydrology warning and forecast services. Areas where improvements are needed include the interaction between river forecast centers and weather forecast offices, the further interaction of hydrology and hydrometeorology operations, staffing levels in some functions, research planning, operational testing and evaluation, and communications with field office staff regarding important aspects of the modernization.
