The report addresses the application of a workload assessment protocol and211u001emeasurement system to empirically assess the degree to which a text message and 211u001ecellular phone system impose workload on heavy vehicle drivers. Sixteen 211u001eprofessional drivers performed over-the-road driving and various conditions of 211u001elighting (dark vs. light), road type (divided vs. undivided), and traffic density 211u001e(high vs. low). Drivers were asked to read a variety of CRT text messages, to 211u001eperform several manual tasks, and to respond to several questions imposing 211u001ecognitive demand.
