The performance evaluation of innovative and alternative environmental211u001etechnologies is an integral part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 211u001e(EPA) mission. In the spirit of the technology policy, the Agency began to direct 211u001ea portion of its resource toward the promotion, recognition, acceptance, and use 211u001eof U.S.-developed innovative environmental technologies both domestically and 211u001eabroad. The environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program was created by 211u001ethe Agency to facilitate the deployment of innovative technologies through 211u001eperformance verification and information dissemination. The performance 211u001everification contained in this report is based on the data collected during a 211u001edemonstration of a field portable gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) 211u001esystem. The demonstration was administered by the Consortium for Site 211u001eCharacterization Technology. For each pilot, EPA utilizes the expertise of 211u001epartner 'verification organizations' to design efficient procedures for 211u001econducting performance tests of environmental technologies. In 1995, the 211u001eConsortium conducted a demonstration of two field portable gas chromatograph/mass 211u001espectrometer systems. The Bruker-Franzen EM640TM GC/MS consists of a temperature-211u001eprogrammable gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer. Overall, the 211u001eresults of the demonstration indicated that most of the performance goals were 211u001emet by the Bruker GC/MS system under field conditions. Based on the results of 211u001ethis demonstration, the Bruker EM640TM CC/MS system was determined to be a mature 211u001efield instrument capable of providing on-site analyses of water and soil gas 211u001esamples comparable to those from a conventional fixed laboratory.
